Hello and welcome to my page. My name is John Franco Saraceno and I’m a trained scientist and amateur maker with over 15 years of experience developing environmental sensors and implementing water quality monitoring networks.
I’m from the San Francisco Bay Area and moved to the greater Sacramento area to attend college in 2004. I received a B.S. in Geology from U.C. Davis in 2006 and later a M.S. in Geology from Sacramento State. Upon graduation, I became a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey where I specialized in water quality sensor development for 12 years. In 2018 I began working in the Division of Integrated Science and Engineering at the California Department of Water Resources where I rebuilt the Quality Assurance Program.
I love finding out how things work by tearing them down (and sometimes putting them back together again…). Recently, I’ve taken up developing low-cost wireless and Arduino based sensor platforms. I also contribute to open source Python packages, Arduino libraries and electronics projects such as the Open Smartwatch. Check out some of my projects on GitHub, especially if you want to contribute and make them better.
When time (and weather) permits, I build and fly drones.
